Short Spring Cemetery


Funeral services for Nina Tatro will be Monday, May 8, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Rev. Drew Kirtley and Rev. Ron Pingelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Short Spring Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. A visitation with family present will be held on Sunday, May 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nina Vaughn Schiffner, daughter of the late Joe and Eva (Moore) Schiffner, was born October 24, 1924, at the farm east of Alva, and passed away surrounded by her family, April 28, 2023, at Alva, at the age of 98 years, 6 months, and 4 days.

When she arrived in Woods County, she was greeted by three sisters, Hannah, Verna, and Sylvia, and a brother, Alfred. She attended grade school at the Elm Dale District 52 and graduated from Horace Mann High School with the Class of 1942. After one year of college at Northwestern State College, she married Robert Leslie Tatro on July 3, 1943. To their marriage three sons: Jimmy Dale, Ronald Dean, and Randall Eugene, were born.

While Robert was serving in the Seabees in England, Nina was employed at the C.R. Anthony Store and the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Following the close of World War II and enjoying three sons, she was busy as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, Parent Teachers Association, teaching Sunday School at the First Christian Church where she became a member of March 23, 1952. She was previously a member of the United Brethren Church, of Ashley, Oklahoma, being baptized in 1932.

In 1969, she assisted at the Carries Play School for seven years. Upon its closing she opened Tatro Tots Preschool. After eight years of enjoying these children she became the bookkeeper for Tatro's Auto Service for 18 years. She enjoyed league bowling and being a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, the Church Choir, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and traveling with the "Do Little" Camping Club. Nina also enjoyed working puzzles and sewing.

Besides her parents and her husband of 60 years, Robert, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Hannah Schiffner, Verna Readnour, and Sylvia Gannon; and one brother Alfred Schiffner.

She is survived by her sons, Jim Tatro and wife, Betty, of Clearwater, Kansas, Ron Tatro and wife, LeAnn, of Vici, and Randy Tatro of Winfield, Kansas; ten grandchildren, Troy Tatro and wife, Lori, of Wichita, Kansas, Jeff Tatro and wife, Lynn, of Clearwater, Kansas, Kimberly Cramer and husband, Brandon, of Silverton, Oregon, Mike Tatro and wife, Dea, of Enid, Brian Tatro of Yukon, Brandon Tatro of San Fransisco, California, Christopher Tatro of North Ogden, Utah, Jennifer Tatro of Boulder, Colorado, Michelle Tatro of Winfield, Kansas, and Kyle Tatro and wife, Taylor, of Winfield, Kansas; thirteen great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.)
